Best of Cambodia - Independent Travel

Many visitors to the country see little of Cambodian life beyond the grand temples of Angkor, but for those with a little more time and an interest in getting a bit further beneath the surface we recommend getting out and experiencing Khmer culture first-hand on our Best of Cambodia itinerary.

During the colonial-era, before the dark days of the Khmer Rouge, Phnom Penh was known as the Pearl of the Orient. Located at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and the Tonle Sap rivers, Cambodia's capital is slowly regaining some of it's former lustre, and makes the ideal starting point for your journey. Get a taste of the highlights to come at the excellent National Museum, or learn more of the Khmer Rouge regime in the infamous Killing Fields.

Heading northwest from the city drive on through bucolic scenes of rural Cambodian life to the town of Battambang, stopping en route at Oudong, a former capital. The strategic location of Battambang, close to the Thai border and Tonle Sap Lake has proved critical throughout its history, and lingering influences of French and Thai rule are evident still. Explore the colonial architecture and outlying temples with your local guide, before continuing to your final destination, Siem Reap.

The ancient and spectacular temples of Angkor are one of Asia's true highlights, and three full days here enables you to take your time and to explore some of the many less-visited temples in addition to the well-known and popular options. Siem Reap itself provides a delightfully relaxing base for your adventures, making this a perfect conclusion to a fascinating insight into the country.

  • Visit the Pearl of the Orient, Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh

Itinerary:
Day 1 Phnom Penh
The first destination on your Cambodian adventure is the nation's modern capital, Phnom Penh. The city, located at the confluence of the mighty rivers of the Mekong and the Tonlé Sap, was once considered amongst the most beautiful in the Orient, and despite its recent turbulent history it retains a colonial charm that is complemented by a growing energy and confidence. You will be met on arrival at Phnom Penh International, and taken to your hotel in the centre of town. After checking in and having chance to relax after your flight you will be taken for a delightful sunset cruise on the Mekong River.

Day 2 Phnom Penh
Today set out with your guide by traditional cyclo bicycle rickshaw to explore the city. Your tour covers both the sombre aspects of modern history at Tuol Sleng, an infamous prison during the Khmer Rouge era, and the more ancient history of the city. Included is a visit to the Royal Palace and the National Museum, housing the world's foremost collection of ancient Khmer artistic, archaeological, and religious artifacts. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Battambang
This morning set off early from Phnom Penh toward the colonial town of Battambang. Along the route there are numerous places of interest where your guide will break the journey. Amongst these are the former capital city of Oudong, and the village of Kampong Chnnang, famed for its pottery. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4 Battambang
A gentle morning of exploring by bike awaits you after breakfast today. The well-preserved French Colonial architecture of town is complemented by the rural landscapes of rice paddies, temples and villages beyond. Your guide will lead you on quiet roads, stopping at markets and places of interest along the way. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Siem Reap
After an early breakfast, embark on a private boat that will take you on a fascinating journey across Tonlé Sap Lake to Siem Reap. You will pass floating villages and flooded forests, portraying life on this vast body of water that forms Cambodia's heart. Take a packed lunch on board, arriving in Siem Reap in mid-afternoon.  Please note this boat trip is only possible in the high water period from July to December - during the dry season the transfer will be made by road stopping at temples and other sites of interest en route. The remainder of the day is at leisure in Siem Reap, gateway to the world-renowned temples of Angkor. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6 Siem Reap
Head out this morning on a wonderful guided exploration of the Angkor sites by tuk tuk. First, head to the ancient city of Angkor Thom; enter the city from the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces, and cycle to the remarkable Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits, and explore the grounds of the former Royal Palace to discover some small hidden temples that are rarely visited. Later this morning visit the famous Ta Prohm temple, the atmospheric jungle-clad temple that featured in the Tomb Raider film. Take a break at midday back at your hotel. Perhaps relax with a massage or a cooling dip in the hotel swimming pool, before heading out again for further exploration under your own steam. We recommend visiting Angkor Wat in the late afternoon, when the temple is somewhat less busy and the evening sun provides a beautiful and photogenic glow. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Siem Reap
An hour's drive  into the countryside northeast of Siem Reap brings you to one of the most atmospheric of the Angkor temples - Beng Mealea. The temple was constructed in a similar style and time to Angkor Wat, during the reign of Suryavarman II, but it has now been largely reclaimed by the jungle. Little-visited compared to the main Angkor temples, Beng Mealea provides a wonderfully adventurous experience and great photographic opportunities. Return to Siem Reap for a leisurely afternoon. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Siem Reap
Your last full day in Siem Reap is at leisure. With a three-day pass in hand you are free to head back to your favourite temples, or head out to make new discoveries. Bikes are easily and cheaply hired in town, and give great freedom to escape from the crowds to the more unusual temples. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9 Siem Reap
Your adventure concludes today, and your guide will take you back to Siem Reap Airport in time for your onward flight home. Meals included: Breakfast
